I just found why my multithreaded python program was only being pegged to one core. Each thread needs to fight over the Global Interpretor Lock because only one thread can access the Interpetors objects/memory, which effectively makes your program singlethreaded.

Why the fuck would the developers put this in if it's not real!?

I knew I should of just wrote it in C.

The developers need to taken out back and beaten with a billy club, cause clearly their mamas didn't raise them right.

PROTIP: Stay the fuck away from this horrible steaming pile of shit they call Python.

If you disagree with me, you can go fuck your dad.

Is it worth learning web dev?

I want to work on systems, networks, and databases and I have zero interest in doing anything front end.
When I look at job postings almost everything expects you to know the full web stack plus frameworks and maybe php.
I’d rather spend my limited time learning more about distributed systems and becoming a specialist in what I’m interested. On the other hand, I see zero entry level jobs for what I want to get into. Recommendations?

I'm dumping Brave since they added "Brave Rewards", but Firefox is still a memory heavy laggy piece of shit. Best bet seems to be Bromite, but Bromite's ad blocking is a lot less flexible than Brave or Firefox with extensions. Plus can I trust Bromite not to be stealing my passwords and shit when it seems to just be made by some random guy? Sure it's open source but that doesn't mean anything unless someone else is actually auditing the source.

/hsg/ Home Server General

Home server thread
maundy thursday 4½ day weekend edition

NAS is how most people get into this. It’s nice have a /comfy/ home for all your data. Streaming your movies/shows around the house and to friends is good feels. Repurpose an old desktop, buy a SBC, or go with cheap used enterprise gear. Lots of options and theres even a flowchart. Ask.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a pfsense box and configuring some vlans. Theres always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re godtier already? Setup openstack and report back.

>What software should I run?
install gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Emby to replace netflix, nextcloud to replace googlel, ampache to replace spotify, the list goes on and on. Look at the awesome selfhosted list and ask.

>Datahoarding ok here?
YES - you are in good company. Shuck those easystores and flash IT mode on your H310. All datahoarding talk welcome.

>Do I need a rack and all that noisey enterprise gear?
No. An old laptop or rpi can be a server if you want.

>advertises itself to users as a browser with ad-blocker that respects their privacy

why people are so retarded? they think that a company that took 50 million dollars from investors would sell them a theme disguised as a browser with adblocker? why can't you people use your fucking brain and see that the only raison d'etre of a company is to make profits? their entire product is nothing but a theme over Chrome and their entire business plan is to replace Google's Adsense (mind you this is the company whom they stole the actual product aka chrome and rebranded it as another brand while it's nothing but a them and another advertising platform that could have been made as a chrome extension but they knew that was illegal)

this is the scam of the century, I can't even understand why Google hasn't sued the shit out of them so far, this is the most shameless theft I've ever seen in tech

I just got hired last week by a rather large tech company to work in a team porting some of the most requested ever applications to Linux, a suite of applications that many people claim to be their only reason stopping them from using Linux in the desktop. The day we release it, it's going to be as big as when Valve made Steam available for Linux. Maybe even bigger.

Linux for actual advanced users

What distro should someone who knows its way around Linux install?
I'm on Fedora currently, should I install CentOS since I can build perfectly everything I need for it? Gentoo? Slackware? Or should I just install the latest Ubuntu?
CentOS has my attention since I hate upgrading and adjusting for new settings often, I just want to setup once and leave it be. I can't even start to consider Arch because I've had xorg stop working after upgrading. It's just poorly maintained and doesn't even support partial upgrades (absolutely none security backports or just a flag for upgrade things needing security fixes). One of the shittiest distros for users of any kind.
I could consider Slackware since it's heavily shilled in

Good security cameras

I am looking for good POE cameras. There are just a billion of them out there, and I have researched a lot, but I can't figure out which ones I like the best.

My last job I installed some 2K Lorex cameras that worked well, had good night vision and all. But for some reason, they were dependent on the processing power from the PC ( we didn't have an NVR, we just had a POE switch that ran to a custom build PC we had ). I'd like to be able to get something that does a good resolution with a decent frame rate. I am trying to stay around $100 per camera, but if the cameras are good, I am will to spend more. I can do an NVR if need be as well, but I really liked the ease of the switch.

Any suggestions, feedback ( positive and negative ) would be a huge help!

PS. I'd like to be able to have access from my phone. Not the end of the world, but would be handy.

How to get out of development

>Choose one of the most meritocratic fields in existence
>Realize i'm a fucking brainlet

How can I salvage my life here? I am too dumb to learn shit like "Big Data", Machine Learning, etc. I can barely keep up with regular development expectations.

I am looking at things like QA, technical writing, business analyst, or possibly some type of agile management. My soft skills are good but my peanut brain is too slow for high performance technical work. Any advice guys? Please

/odg/ - Optical Disc General

What was the last time you used an optical disc?

A thread for any type of discussion of digital optical discs. In case your PC doesn't support them or you generally think OD's are outdated, there is a number of reasons to still use them. While discs take more time to write to, have fewer rewrites and typically hold less data, they are also much cheaper, store data for 30-1000 years, are often supported by older and simpler machines. Plus, DVD-RAM has most of the general optical disc issues solved.
>do you have any LaserDiscs?
>are LaserDisc releases any better than DVD?

Resources and info:

>Information related to CD's (physical properties) (burning speeds for the 3 generations of OD's)
>Information related to DVD's (general DVD-RAM info) (the rare high-speed DVD-RAM discs, I have 2 of these) (MO, PD, DVD-RAM - both 3x cartridge discs and RAM2 discs)
>Information related to Blu-ray discs (100gb/128gb discs)

Reviving an old Sony ericson walkamn w200i

I know i know this kind of thread should belong in /wsr/ but there is no one in there, so i guess i'll post it here

Look im trying to revive my 10 year old phone (Sony ercison walkman w200i) (to use it as an emergency phone), but when i use a modern SIM (the white one) card, its says "insert correct SIM card".

in the other hand, when i use the old one (the blue one) all goes flawesly, but it says that the SIM is inactive,

The questuon is, how can i use this phone in this modern age?

what is your favourite application for streaming a desktop to a laptop /g/friends?
I've tried a few to no avail so I just gave up and installed steam. add a non-steam game and then add foobar2000, launch it streamed, alt tab on the main computer and wala, you can do your work on your botnet windows computer from bed.
Is there any FOSS or open source remote desktop program that "just werks"?
something over local network for home use would be preferred.
steam works without port forwarding, why can't any of the freefag programs do the same?

Absolute cheapest desktop to watch movies online?

Screen Shot 2019-04-20 at 10.06.08 PM
My mom wants to watch movies online from a desktop to her 1080p TV.
So it would need an HDMI.
What else should I look for? I'm thinking she will need at least Intel i3 nowadays.
Basically those scammy sites with a bunch of popups with free movies.

Hardware firewall

I like to use some Linux distros that don't ship with a firewall on by default, and being on a dynamic connection with only a modem I have to use dhcpcd.

Which hardware firewall should I get? I don't need it for anything but a default block in all-policy, no real need for packet inspection or VPN and remote access tools. Using a regular router seems overkill, and not what I want, plus the more I read about them, the more flaws I find.
I need something a small business would want, as recommended by someone smart.

I recall someone saying Cisco's HFs were bad, but... does anyone know?

my shits fucked up please help

what up chumps i am building a pc and have assembled everything except for hdd and or ssd because i do not have one
i plugged in the power and the hdmi and everything apears to function properly (all the fans and the lights go on excpet for lights on the motherboard but i dont think that is necessarily indicative of what the issue is, as i saw a guy on youtube using the same one and it worked but had no lights) but nothing displays on the screen.
i tries many suggestions which were recommended on reddit, such as reconnecting the gpu and ram, removing everything but one ram from the motherboard, removing my gpu and using only the integrated one, still it does not work. i also plugged the hdmi chord into the gpu and i tried 2 different hdmi chords and 2 different monitors (a tv and a monitor)
i would greatly appreciate any help identifying and solving the issue, thank you!

heres a list of my parts and some pictures

Why in the fuck do computers still have moving parts? We have the tech to make fully functional computers that don't require ANY moving parts the norm, yet your standard PC still is as full of fans as a football stadium. Moving parts fucking suck. They're noisy and they break. And fans just suck dust into your system. The options for fanless PCs on the market are insanely expensive and have severely limited functionality. WHY??
