/herp/ - Reptile and Amphibian General - An ancient evil awakens edition

IMG_1467
This thread is dedicated to all animals of the reptilia and amphibia families. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

Pit_bull_mix
genuine question
why do pitbulls have such a bad reputation, yet the UKC (United Kennel Club) says the following about their temperament?

>The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make good family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed’s natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, especially with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work, especially in ratting pits.

I mean of course pitbulls have caused some horrible deaths, but if the UKC is saying this, surely the trouble making ones are far outliers? is the knee-jerk reaction to pitbulls on here just because the horrible things the bad ones have done involved children and babies?

Transforming leaf litter forest floor to garden

1200px-Forest-floor076
How can i transform a forest floor like pic related to a partial shade garden? I know the first step would be to blow away all the leaves. My soil is slightly moist and there is a small permanent puddle where I want to put the plants, so I was thinking of using plants such as creeping Jenny, corkscrew rush, and pleioblastus bamboo. I also have a bunch of perennial wildflower seeds that I intend to throw out there and see if they grow in the partial shade.
What are some other plants I can attempt to grow? I was considering forget-me-not as I heard that it was partial shade. Also can Boston ferns and those other uniquely colored ferns survive a winter in the North East?

WORLD PANGOLIN DAY

babyPang
It's World Pangolin Day. For those who don't know, pangolins are:

1) The only scaled mammal in existance
2) Absolutely fucking badass
3) The most poached animal on Earth

They are mostly poached because they are highly valued in certain eastern societies (mostly China) for traditional medicine and cuisine. Currently, all 8 species of Pangolin are vulnerable or endangered.

The only thing the Chinese fear more than anything is having small penises. As such, it is IMPERATIVE that we create a strong cultural belief that eating Pangolin scales shrinks their dicks.

Please make memes about Pangolin scales shrinking dicks and post them on normie websites as well as Chinese websites. Together, I'm sure we can save these beautiful animals.

I am very conflicted about animals

angry-cat-istock-177033046
I've loved animals my whole life, but lately I've come to a point where I'm losing all respect towards them.

I've had a cat for a few years now. He is generally tame and quiet, but he can get stressed and skittery easily, and will usually scratch and bite if petted for more than 5 seconds. I took this as typical cat behaviour, but now I'm realising that I'm caring for this creature that clearly doesn't like and couldn't care less about me. It is leeching off me, while being hostile when I try to act friendly. The only time it ever shows any interest in me is when it's hungry. Why am I even caring for this ungrateful thing that vomits on my carpet every few days?

I let the cat in my room while I was on the computer and he laid on my bed. He got up, coughed up a hairball, then pissed all over the sheets. I would lie if I said I didn't want to hit him. As he just jumped down and strutted away like nothing happened, I finally realised that animals don't deserve any care. They're just beasts and wild creatures that only belong in the wilderness. No, I don't hate animals, but I just cannot respect them anymore on a civilised level. I don't want to care for them, I just want to admire them from a distance. I'm never going to have pets again, or let animals into my home.

I'm conflicted because I don't know if this incident was an accident or because the cat genuinely lacks any sort of restraint and sense of wrong, or even if not all cats are this bad. But I am sure all animals are like this to some degree (even humans), because they just don't know better. Hate me all you want for what I've said, but it won't change the fact that I have no interest in caring for animals anymore. Maybe if you guys post stories about times where animals actually cared for you and would behave properly, then I might reconsider everything and just blame my cat for being an asshole.

My veiled chamelon was on the floor of his habitat on his side. Mouth a tad open. I thought he was super dead but I had to go to work so I just kinda set him on top of a decoration tower and put the heat lamp directly over the glass. Got home and he was back on the floor but he was upright, tail curled, mouth and eyes open. Picked him up, bathed him now he's back on his branch.

What do?

default
This thread is dedicated to all animals of the reptilia and amphibia families. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

Feel free to discuss or argue about all things related to extinct flora and fauna here. For example, the lip question. Did many extinct animals have lips covering their teeth or were the teeth exposed? Does shrinkwrapping fossils give an accurate representation of what extinct creatures really looked like? Does the T. rex have feathers on top of its head and along its spine? Is the spinosaurus quadrupedal? Why do people ignore paleo invertebrates? Will taxonomists ever stop being autistic? Find out more in this episode of /paleo/ General.

Killing lots of rats

rats-528904
How do I kill lots of rats? I'm at my parents' old farm house, and they are heating it by burning assortment waste from grain, and area in which it is kept is plated with metal.
They had noticed some rat droppings in the area(no fucking surprise, it's a fucking buffet for them), so earlier I made sure there was no way for any rat that got in to climb out by clearing shit away from walls. Now when I went back to check the place out at night and shined light in, there was like 30 of them, all struggling to somehow get out.

So, what is the best way to get rid of these? I don't want to let the cat out anymore, since she might get the bright idea to jump in to hunt them, and actually getting eaten herself.
Will they be able to break through the metal? Are they going to start thirsting and killing eachother before that can happen? Should I just rush to farming market tomorrow and buy poison?
...No picture of the rat swarm in question. I can go and take one if needed, in case you don't believe me.

I've been keeping her in a spare room for now away from my resident cat to help her adjust until she feels better. My resident indoor cat hasn't had a FVRCP vaccination in about two years per his vet's recommendation (they said every three years). Do you think it would be best if I give him a booster before introducing the two?

Homemade dog food

IMG_0258
Hey, i'm going to take care of my familys pet jack russel for over a week, they are all going on holiday and i came over to take care of him. He does not eat the dry pet food when my little sister and little brother are gone, since he gets alot of pets and company from them. He refuses to eat if you are not doing stuff on the chitchen counter . I am going to make him some home made dog food with rice/beef/carrots so that he eats and does not succumb to sadness due to missing them too mutch. But i was just going to boil the rice and fry the beef in olive oil, and i was wondering if you have some good dog food recipes.

What reptile is this? They started appearing randomly in my backyard. I live in south america, if that helps.

They are really cool, they don't have noticeable teeth, and are non agressive. I had to put my finger up to his nose to make him bit me, didn't do anything.

Also, the other day I was trying to rescue one because it went into my home, but he jumped out of my hand and his tail came off. So, they can do that as well.

I have a black labrador that's 7 years old. When she was 3 she was stolen from me and has been missing for 4 years. She has a microchip so after 4 years I received a phone call from the pound and was told that they have my dog. I could hardly believe it, I have had mental issues and a hard life as described by extended family.
I have put an add on the internet looking for a partner for her, not to make money but to continue her bloodline and to be able to keep one of her pups instead of her getting too old and dying which would leave me completely alone. Several people made mean comments saying I was only breeding her for the money and didn't care about her. I spend alot of money on top quality food and vet services and treat her more like a human than a dog. What are your thoughts on what I should do?

Dried apples as winter goat feed?

IMG_0156
So i'm up in Maine and raising goats on 46 acres inna woods. Unless there is snow they really don't need any feed. The stuff is expensive.

I do however have access to tons of crab apples and dozens of 55 gallon plastic barrels. Any problems with quartering half a dozen barrels worth of apples, drying them and using them as feed?

I figure i'll need to use it as a supplement as opposed to a primary feed to avoid bloat and urinary problems, anyone have any ideas as to what portion of their over all feed would be appropriate?

Have you ever met a """dog""" that was less than 30 pounds and wasn't a complete cunt?

They bark and snarl from their owners arms but put them on the ground and they become cowardly little bastards, yelping at the top of their lungs if another larger dog even sniffs them

They'll bite the back of your ankle then squeal like piglets if you so much as turn around threateningly

They're inbred little monsters that serve absolutely no purpose other than being purse accessories for middle aged white women, the type who wear sunglasses everywhere and demand to see your manager

They're an evolutionary joke that isn't even funny, I'd call them rats but then I'd have to apologize to the entire nation of Israel

Black leopard spotted in Africa for first time in 100 years.

download (5)
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2019/02/rare-black-panther-spotted-in-africa-century/

>The Kenya-based biologist and his team deployed a set of camera traps throughout the bushlands of Loisaba Conservancy in early 2018. It wasn't long before he got what he was looking for: undeniable proof of a super-rare melanistic leopard. The juvenile female was spotted traveling with a larger, normally colored leopard, presumed to be her mother.

>The opposite of albinism, melanism is the result of a gene that causes a surplus of pigment in the skin or hair of an animal so that it appears black. Melanistic leopards have been reported in and around Kenya for decades, but scientific confirmation of their existence remains quite rare.

>Published in January in the African Journal of Ecology, these photos represent the first scientific documentation of such a creature in Africa in nearly a century.

>As recently as 2017, only a single sighting had been confirmed—a 1909 photograph taken in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and stored in the collections of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Their range across much of the continent has shrunk by at least 66 percent due to habitat loss and prey decline.

Norway allows dumping mine waste directly to the ocean

norway
Norway is the only country in Europe – and one of only five in the world – that allows mining companies to dump solid mine waste directly into the sea. And they are doing it again. BIG TIME.

Norway has approved a plan to begin mining for copper in the Arctic, angering environmentalists who fear it will lead to the destruction of reindeer pastures and the pollution of nearby fjords.
